Amber Hunting
It may sound like one of Captain Hook’s far-fetched stories, but treasure hunting in Kolobrzeg is not a fairy tale. On the contrary, hundreds come here every year and early in the morning try their chances searching for “jewels straight from the sea” – amber. This 30-90 million years old fossilized resin of ancient trees has been highly priced for centuries not only because of its beauty but also due to its mysterious qualities. The ancient Romans believed that wearing amulets made of amber was effective in treating fevers, headaches and would keep you young. Nowadays, some of these beliefs were proven and it is widely known that amber emits anions that are good for the human body especially curing rheumatic pains.
If you consider yourself lucky you may be able to stumble upon pieces of amber buried on the shore. Increase your chances by coming to the beach before dawn and after a storm. That is when even large lumps are often washed out to the beach from the depths of the sea. You may be surprised how much some of the pieces are worth.
Of course, the less fortunate can find a great selection of amber jewelry available through local vendors. Polished and embedded in silver, amber will add sparkle to even most glamorous beauty.
